DESCRIPTION: Males are up to 5mm in length, females up to 6mm. The thorax and abdomen of this neat little fly are brownish and the head sports large yellow-reddish eyes. The abdomen of the females ends in a tapered ovipositor, while it is rather rounded in males. The legs are yellowish. These small flies have light beige wings with large dark brown markings and small hyaline areas and only two small dark marks towards the tip. The apical fork is missing. BEHAVIOUR: The larvae feed on Hawk's-Beards, Cat's-Ears and Sow Thistles where they are the causal agents of galls. DISTRIBUTION: Fairly common and widespread throughout, especially in southern Britain. HABITAT: Meadows, grassland and urban gardens or wherever the foodplant grows. PERIOD: April to late summer.
